Context and programme objectives

Excellent research-based training at master’s and PhD level

The Zuse Schools offer a full course of research-oriented training that will appeal to master’s and PhD students alike. This structure enables students to seamlessly continue on their academic path and engage in-depth with AI topics.

The three Zuse Schools – ELIZA (Berlin, Darmstadt, Freiburg, Heidelberg, München, Saarbrücken, Tübingen), SECAI (Dresden and Leipzip) and relAI (Munich) are graduate schools. They receive funding from the BMFTR through the DAAD within the framework of the German government’s AI strategy. Its declared objective is to develop AI in Germany, focusing on trustworthiness, ethical standards and European values. The programme aims to generate long-term impact: to help raise the profile of the participating universities in research-based AI teaching, to create career options for highly qualified AI professionals in Germany and to intensify transdisciplinary knowledge transfer.

Network of science, business and society

One outstanding feature of the Zuse Schools is the close cooperation between universities, non-university research institutions and companies. This promotes knowledge transfer and enables students to acquire relevant practical experience.

These partnerships are expressly designed to strengthen the teaching and research on offer in fields of AI while at the same time offering attractive career paths in science and business – both nationally and internationally.

A strong network makes for transparent and rapid knowledge transfer – through exchange formats, joint projects and regular meetings such as the annual Zuse Schools network meetings that bring together researchers, students and industry representatives.

Individual supervision and mentoring

Leibniz-Rechenzentrum der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften

Students profit from supervision by experienced mentors from various disciplines in science and industry. This individual support helps them achieve their academic and professional goals and fosters their personal development within their respective field of AI.

The mentors come from universities, non-university research institutions, as well as from the research and development departments of companies. This ensures multifaceted mentoring that focuses on different career paths.

The support provided by the Zuse Schools encompasses not only expert supervision but also funding for stays abroad and assistance with family-related matters, e.g. the provision of additional benefits for spouses, partners and children.

International orientation and mobility funding

Konrad Zuse Schools Herbstevent 2024

The Zuse Schools welcome talents from all over the world in Germany. Exchange programmes, international cooperative projects and mobility funding give students the chance to gain global perspectives and build up international networks.

Students both from abroad and Germany can apply. Mobility grants for return travel and for stays abroad actively support the programme’s global orientation.

The Zuse Schools have established themselves as internationally visible centres of German AI – supported by the DAAD’s experience in building global networks.
