DAAD President Professor Margret Wintermantel on the current situation in Turkey

"It is with great concern that we observe the current situation in Turkey. For many years we have been working in a very close and trusting manner with Turkish researchers, academics and universities in the country. The current massive and substantial violation of the autonomy of the universities in Turkey is unacceptable. Scientific freedom and an open critical discourse are basic conditions for a working democracy and scientific progress. Universities depend on freedom of expression and international academic exchange. The mass suspensions and the dismissal of elected representatives and university members as well as the restriction and obstruction of academic mobility are therefore not tolerable.
Turkey urgently needs, in these times more than ever, the freedom of science and an open dialogue. The DAAD will take a clear stand for restoring academic freedom in Turkey and at the Turkish universities."
