Overview

The dormitory Händelstrasse is located in the district Herdern. The building, which features a historically protected bell tower, was once used to host railway workers and later was as an orphanage. Today, students live here in flat-sharing communities or in single apartments.

Behind house no. 20 are two new and modern buildings (Händelstrasse 18 A and 18 b).

Practice rooms for musicians, a café, and enough area for activities are available to students. The idyllic location and atmosphere makes this dorm so popular for all students in Freiburg.

It takes 10 minutes to get into the city centre by bike. The tram stop and the train Station "Freiburg-Herdern" are within walking distance.

Rent deposit

At the beginning of the tenancy, a deposit of € 500.00 for single rooms or € 600.00 for single rooms and € 700.00 for flats is due, which will be returned after moving out, provided there are no complaints about the room. The deposit will be refunded approx. 4 weeks after the end of the contract.

Duration of housing

In order to allow as many students as possible to live in a dormitory, the rental contract period is limited to six semesters.

In special and justified cases, it is possible to extend the rental contract for up to eight more semesters.

Application requirements
All students who study at a higher education institution associated with the Studierendenwerk Freiburg can apply for a place in a student residence in the respective location.

Application deadline
At the earliest, you can apply six months before your desired move-in date. Your application is valid for a maximum of six months.

You can apply even though you have not received your admission or matriculation from your University yet, but please consider that your application is only complete when the Studierendenwerk has received an admission letter or proof of matriculation.

Following the nomination from your home university, the Erasmus office in Freiburg will send you a link to the online registration form via e-mail. You can apply for a place in the student dormitory through the online registration form in your application portal.

The application must be submitted between 15 April and 15 June for the winter semester and between 30 September and 30 November for the summer semester. Rental periods are for the entirety of a semester (winter semester: 1 October to 31 March / summer semester: 1 April to 30 September).

Please keep in mind that Freiburg is a very popular destination for students. This means that each semester, particularly in the winter semester, there is a significant shortage of housing.
International Master's programmes have their own room/apartment allocation. Please contact your programme coordinator and NOT the International Office.
