European Universities: Cross-border for Europe
DAAD Theme Week
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is launching the "Week of European Universities" on 5 May. Under the patronage of Federal Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger, the week will offer insights into the "European University Alliances" for the third time. Around Europe Day on 9 May, the theme week will show how German universities are involved in the EU programme for cross-border cooperation in research, teaching and European values. A total of around 30 events are planned in 18 cities.
"In the face of major challenges such as the geopolitical situation, the race for technology and threats to democracy, we need a strong Europe. Cross-border cooperation in education and science is a cornerstone of this and strengthens our common values. Universities and scientific institutions have been outstanding examples of cooperation in the EU for decades. The European University Alliances have played a pioneering role here since 2019: they drive scientific progress and institutional integration at the same time, strengthen the European Higher Education Area in global competition and convey European values. It is therefore very pleasing that 33 German universities are taking part in the DAAD's theme week, for which I am delighted to be the patron," said Federal Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger.
"The European University Alliances are not only a symbol of close cooperation between universities: they are also a sign of cross-border cohesion and the strength of the European Union. They are an example of how we can overcome challenges together and how we can contribute to stability and reliability and at the same time to progress in the EU through education and research. It is impressive to see the great commitment shown by all participating German universities when it comes to filling the alliances with life. Together with the BMBF, we are making this commitment to Europe, university cooperation and scientific exchange visible as part of the EU theme week," said DAAD President Prof. Dr Joybrato Mukherjee.
Europe Day on 9 May
Around Europe Day on 9 May, the theme week provides an insight into the diverse commitment of German universities that are involved in cross-border university networks as part of the "European Universities" initiative. 33 universities are taking part in the theme week. The programme includes information events, conferences and panel discussions, poster exhibitions, country and international fairs, quiz evenings, spring schools, hybrid courses and an entire festival on the theme of Europe.
European Universities
The European Universities are cross-border university alliances that jointly develop innovative teaching and learning formats as well as new forms of cooperation in education, research and technology transfer. Launched in 2019, 50 alliances are now funded by the EU as part of the Erasmus+ programme. There are currently 51 German universities involved in a total of 44 alliances. This makes German universities the frontrunners in the EU initiative.
National Accompanying Programme
In Germany, the DAAD supports German universities as part of the BMBF-funded accompanying programme "European University Networks (EUN) - National Initiative". In the accompanying programme, the participating German universities receive additional financial support as well as support for greater visibility of the European initiative. This includes networking opportunities for the participating universities as well as exchange formats with politicians at federal and state level.
