Special features regarding teaching

Teaching takes place primarily in the foreign language. Research and teaching are closely linked thematically. Each semester, numerous guest lectures by national and international academics are held that enrich the range of courses offered by the department. On the university's e-learning platform, students can find materials accompanying the lecture to facilitate in-depth independent study.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Excellent, international networking, including through: 12 Erasmus partnerships with Italian higher education institutions, 12 with Spanish higher education institutions, 5 with French higher education institutions, 3 with Portuguese higher education institutions and 1 with Belgium higher education institutions; Special exchange programme with the École Normale Supérieure Lyon, the Colegio de México, Mexico City, the Universidad Católica de Santa María, Arequipa (Peru) and the Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar in Quito (Ecuador); The practical semester can also be completed at a German school abroad, e.g. in Argentina, Belgium, France, Italy, Mexico, Switzerland, Spain or Uruguay.

Special features regarding the equipment

Academic special library (approx. 125,000 volumes) with film archive; Two centres that promote academic and cultural activities: Bureau de la Coopération Universitaire (collaborative work with the French Embassy), the Italian Centre (collaborative work with Italienisches Kulturinstitut Stuttgart [Stuttgart Italian Cultural Institute]); Research Centre "European Centre for Linguistics" (cooperation with the Universität Heidelberg and the Institute for German Language, Mannheim); Ibero-America Centre: strengthening of dialogue in research and teaching (supported by the Santander Universidades Programme)

Other special features

The Romance Studies department is dedicated to the full range of Romance Studies and attaches importance to having extensive degree courses on offer. This includes not only Italian, French and Spanish but also the Romance languages Portuguese, Galician, Catalan and Romanian.
