Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Concentration on Organismic Biology (Botany, Zoology, Ecology) in the Bachelor's degree course. The subject-related and subject-related didactic research projects complement each other and aim overall to achieve "holistic biology" in research and teaching of Biology in schools! Students' own research can therefore be directly integrated into teaching and tested. State-of-the-art media and innovative communication technologies as well as extra-curricular learning locations are used.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Master of Education programme builds on the bachelor's degree programme and carefully prepares students for their future teaching careers. The course now focuses on hard skills and skills for teaching biological content as well as skills for dealing with concepts, using both traditional biology teaching methods and innovative approaches.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Theses in behavioural biology are embedded in national and international research projects, which is also possible for polychaetology. In addition, there are some international contacts, making internships in nature conservation and species protection possible. Projects have already been successfully carried out in Bali (sea turtles) and in South America (wildlife monitoring).

Special features regarding the equipment

As the focus is on teacher training, the technical equipment is adapted accordingly. The usability of large-format equipment in courses and for final theses is important, which is why an easy-to-use and mobile SEM tabletop was purchased instead of a conventional SEM. The faculty has its own seminar library to make it easier for students to access the necessary resources. Resources on the subject of polychaetes are particularly extensive and also include an advanced database.

Special features regarding research activities

There is a strong regional link. Through a cooperation for water and floodplain exploration along the Vechtaer Moorbach, students can participate in an ecological long-term study and gain contacts with nature conservation associations, schools and the city. Ethological studies are possible within the framework of the (inter)national network Mammalia AG. Or students can get involved in the MINT4YOUth project in which, together with the local districts, an extracurricular STEM programme for young people is bundled, strengthened, expanded and made more accessible.

Other special features

Diversity and sustainability are 2 of the 4 cross-sectional dimensions of the university, which are also considered from a biological perspective in our faculty. We still offer botanical and zoological determination courses and, on the other hand, but we also have a sustainability module that puts into practice education for sustainable development with selected teaching methods (including the "mystery method"). Sustainable thinking and action are also integrated in all biology modules, which is particularly important in the teacher training we specialise in.
