Target group

The Master's degree course in Applied Materials Science is aimed at materials engineers, medical engineers, mechanical engineers, production and manufacturing engineers as well as natural scientists who want to enhance their skills in Materials Science.

Annotation

The Master’s degree programme provides a deeper introduction to the topics of materials science, materials engineering and production and manufacturing engineering. The teaching of management and simulation skills rounds off your studies. In addition, students can expand their soft skills during their education. The curriculum also includes research work placements and project work. The Master’s thesis completes the academic degree. Students deepen their understanding of the systematic structure of applied materials science in five focus modules. Two compulsory modules • Surface engineering: Surface engineering and interface reactions, functionalisation of surfaces (work placement) • Functional materials: Structure of functional materials including Functional Materials advanced seminar Five optional modules • Process and Material Bionics: Bionics and Advanced Nanotechnology advanced seminar • Hybrid Materials: Composite Materials and their Processing Methods (lecture and work placement) • Materials in Medical Technology: Medical Materials (choice of material, design, manufacturing processes, corrosion) and advanced seminar • Manufacturing Engineering: Specialisation in Manufacturing Processes (e.g. machining of high-performance materials) and work placement • Innovative Manufacturing Processes: Additive Manufacturing Processes and work placement Students develop their individual profiles by choosing three of these five elective modules and a free elective module worth 9 ECTS. The Faculty of Materials Engineering and Materials Sciences on campus has an excellently equipped materials engineering laboratory, where Bachelor’s and Master’s students or doctoral students and companies can carry out experiments for practical work or research and development. The university and the companies have so far invested around EUR 2 million in equipping the materials engineering laboratory. This has created an excellent working environment for students, professors, doctoral candidates and companies.
