DAAD President Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee on the United Kingdom's return to the Erasmus+ programme
Erasmus+
"We at the DAAD expressly welcome the UK's return to the EU's Erasmus+ mobility programme from 2027, as agreed today. This important decision sends a strong signal for cross-border education and exchange opportunities in Europe. It reopens avenues for young people from the United Kingdom and the European Union to gain international learning experiences and personal and academic development that go far beyond formal study visits.
Participation in the Erasmus+ programme not only enables academic mobility, but also strengthens mutual intercultural exchange and contributes significantly to the formation of a vibrant European identity. Especially at a time when the challenges facing young people are becoming more complex, such experiences are key to promoting understanding, openness and cohesion across borders.
In the wake of Brexit, we at the DAAD repeatedly pointed out that the United Kingdom's withdrawal from Erasmus+ had left a large gap in the European Higher Education Area. As the DAAD, we are the national agency responsible for implementing the Erasmus+ programme in higher education. The resumption of the programme that has now been agreed is therefore an important step towards reconnecting academic communities and expanding opportunities for students and universities across Europe.
There are certainly still many details to be clarified regarding the return of British higher education institutions to the Erasmus+ programme – but one thing is already clear: Welcome back, dear British friends, welcome back, United Kingdom!"
