Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

In our faculty, the semester groups are deliberately small, with 35-40 students, to enable close cooperation between professors and students. The lectures are therefore almost seminar-like in nature. Theory is applied directly in exercises and projects. Thanks to the close connection between studies, laboratory practicals, practical semesters and project work, you not only gain specialist knowledge but also important social skills such as teamwork and communication – supported by intensive supervision from our lecturers.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

In the Master's degree programme, the semester groups are kept deliberately small, with only 12 students, which enables intensive collaboration and direct contact with professors. As a result, the lectures are seminar-like in nature and build on the knowledge you gained in your Bachelor's degree. Theory is deepened and applied in practice through exercises and extensive project work. The combination of courses and personal supervision helps you to expand your specialist knowledge and at the same time to develop important social skills such as teamwork and leadership.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The faculty has maintained a global network of partner universities and companies for many years. The semester abroad and research semesters are organised, work placements are arranged and research and development-related projects carried out in this network. Selected lectures are offered in English to provide optimal support for student exchanges with partner universities. Particularly noteworthy are the binational Master of Engineering Management in Argentina and the Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Construction Management in Vietnam.

Special features regarding the equipment

The faculty has four institutes with a total of seven laboratories and three testing centres. Central research management ensures an effective and interdisciplinary use of the laboratories for research activities, as well as a close mutual relationship between teaching and applied research. In addition to the usual testing and inspection equipment in construction material and component testing, geoengineering and hydraulic engineering, a collaborative industrial robot is available for the further development of automated production in structural timber engineering.

Special features regarding research and development

Biberach University of Applied Sciences is characterised by a wide range of research projects in its specialised institutes. The Institute of Structural Civil Engineering (IKI) develops innovative construction technologies. The Institute of Geology and Environment (IGU) focuses on water, geoengineering and environmental issues. The Institute of Structural Timber Engineering (IfH) promotes the sustainable use of wood in building and construction through interdisciplinary research. The Institute of Innovative Building and Project Management (IBP) develops CO₂-reducing building solutions and productivity-enhancing technologies.

Other special features

Our faculty is characterised by the targeted support of all students. Numerous Germany scholarships, DAAD and Baden-Württemberg scholarships promote local and international study. Students of the binational Master's degree programme in Engineering Management are funded through the scholarship schemes of the German-Argentinian University Network (DAHZ). Specialist research focuses on the topics of structural timber engineering, clay construction, construction logistics and industrial prefabrication. One unique feature is the close and practice-oriented collaboration with the Centre of Excellence for Structural Timber Engineering in the training of carpenters and engineers.
