Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The Civil and Environmental Engineering degree programme, with its combination of the two closely related disciplines that is unique in Germany, trains engineers who think in an interdisciplinary and solution-oriented way: Civil engineers deal with the planning, construction and maintenance of residential and office buildings, bridges, railways, tunnels, airports and harbours. Environmental engineers plan and build supply and disposal systems, deal with the management of water bodies, ground water, waste water, waste and fundamental questions of environmental protection and sustainability.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Master's degree programmes offer a scientific focus, specific areas of specialisation, clear practical references and interdisciplinary course content. In addition to the core qualification, students choose from up to five specialisations, e.g. "Port and Harbour Development and Coastal Protection". Teaching is closely linked with the current research topics of the institutes and also relates to important professional fields of activity. The international Master's programme offers sound fundamentals, interdisciplinary considerations and a focus on current developments in environmental technology.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The School of Civil Engineering cooperates with more than 50 international partner universities worldwide in research and teaching so as to enable all interested students to spend a qualified period of time studying abroad. Specialist supervision for exchange students is provided by a dedicated advisory office within the department. The broad range of courses in English, internationally oriented course content as well as the international Master's courses also attract a large number of international students, especially from China, followed by Mexico and India.

Special features regarding the equipment

In addition to the state-of-the-art laboratories of the institutes (open all day and, if required, also at the weekend) for teaching, practical laboratory work, simulation calculations or for theses, there is now also the CampusLAB Circular Economy. Newly developed processes and products are presented here by Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) or start-ups to various visitor groups (e.g. students, politicians, companies, school classes). The core principles of the circular economy are presented throughout the product chain from biomass to high-performance materials to their recycling.

Special features regarding research activities

The "Climate-Informed Engineering" Research Training Group, founded at the end of 2024, trains at least 20 scientists who, among other things, can use advanced climate modelling to develop resilient infrastructures, sustainable resource management systems and climate-adapted materials, in line with the UNU Hub "Engineering to Face Climate Change" founded in 2024. Further research is concentrated on the following topics across institutes: Building in and on the water; Digitalisation and automation; Sustainability and infrastructure; Water, environment, climate and adaptation

Other special features

In addition to classic Civil Engineering, Construction and Environmental Engineering also addresses resource-saving environmental design against the backdrop of climate protection, climate adaptation and demographic change: Urban redevelopment and demolition, energy-efficient building renovation, drinking and waste water management, circular economy, protection against natural forces by dikes and near-natural water expansion. At ECIU University, interested parties work in teams with other students, researchers, external companies, communities or NGOs on "challenges" involving relevant issues relating to the UN Sustainability Goals.
