Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers a broad range of courses in civil and environmental engineering. Tutorials and small group exercises support access to the course content and enable intensive supervision of the students. The teaching staff's excellent links to professional practice mean that the course focuses on application, building on the teaching of sound basic knowledge. The labs and workshops illustrate the acquired theoretical skills as part of various practicals.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

In the Master's degree programmes of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the wide range of elective and compulsory elective modules offers extensive opportunities for individual specialisation. In addition to the traditional engineering disciplines, courses are offered on particularly forward-looking topics such as building information modelling, automation of construction processes, resource efficiency of buildings, building material recycling, simulation technology, artificial intelligence and big data in environmental planning.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The faculty has a broad network of research institutions and industry partners around the world. There are structured programmes for the promotion of international mobility of students and young researchers as part of joint research projects. Students receive intensive support in planning stays abroad and internships (e.g. Erasmus). The international English-language degree course "Computational Engineering" with a sister course at the Vietnamese-German-University (VGU) is in great demand worldwide.

Special features regarding the equipment

The faculty has excellent IT equipment for use in teaching, including five computer clusters with 150 PCs and extensive software packages as well as an extensively equipped virtual reality laboratory (VR lab), in which methods and concepts for digitally inspecting buildings and planning-oriented tools are created. All technical test facilities in the modern test hall, extensive laboratory facilities and the faculty's own boundary layer wind tunnel are used in teaching.

Special features regarding research activities

In addition to working on numerous individual funding projects, the faculty is also involved in several research associations. For example, the German Research Foundation-funded (DFG) Collaborative Research Centre 1683 "Methods of Interaction for the Modular Reuse of Existing Load-bearing Structures", as well as the participation in the Research Group 2825 "Concrete Damage Assessment by Coda Waves" and the Priority Programme 2187 "Adaptive Modular Construction with Flow Manufacturing Methods – Precision Rapid Construction of the Future" enable students to pursue research-oriented studies as part of their coursework and theses.

Other special features

To increase the proportion of women among students and in the scientific field, numerous individually tailored projects are offered. These include project workshops for schoolgirls, the "Girls Day" and the career event for graduates "CrossING" - awarded the Lore Agnes Prize of the Ruhr University Bochum in 2015. Intensive support is provided for students in the initial study phase.
