Further information provided by the department

Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

In the first four semesters, the basics of all areas of specialisation are taught (basic modules). In the fifth and sixth semesters, students can deepen all subject areas and choose from a wide range of options.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

There is great freedom of choice for modules from all areas of specialisation (except site management). Some of the modules are offered in English. Master's students are often included in research projects.

Special features regarding the international orientation

In both the Bachelor's degree course as well as in the Master's degree course, a semester is integrated in which there are no compulsory courses. This gives students the opportunity to study abroad without delaying their studies. There are good contacts with both international universities and companies. The foreign representatives support you in planning a stay abroad. The International Office is a competent point of contact for interested parties. https://www.hochschule-bochum.de/die-bo/wichtige-einrichtungen/international-office/uebersicht

Special features regarding the equipment

The department has very well and modernly equipped laboratories for hydraulic engineering, urban water management, building materials/structural civil engineering, geotechnical engineering and building physics. There is a close cooperation with the International Geothermal Centre, now Fraunhofer IEG, which was founded by the department, to introduce students to the promising technology of geothermal energy. All lecture theatres and seminar rooms are equipped with modern presentation equipment, and well-equipped workspaces are available to students.

Special features regarding research and development

The department carries out numerous research projects in structural civil engineering, traffic systems and hydraulic engineering. In cooperation with Fraunhofer IEG, professors from the department lead or participate in projects there.

Other special features

Bochum University of Applied Sciences sees itself as a sustainable university and has been consistently pursuing this strategy for many years. Sustainability is practised in all areas of the university. https://www.hochschule-bochum.de/nachhaltige-hsbo/; The topic of diversity is also very important and has been embraced for many years.
