Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The Bachelor's degree course in Architecture at the KIT Faculty of Architecture is broadly based. It teaches basic knowledge and methodological skills for the design and planning of rooms, buildings and cities. Each semester, the focus is on a design project, which is worked on in the studios. Depending on the task, questions about construction, urban development, building technology or architectural theory may be important in addition to artistic design. Accompanying courses teach knowledge and specialist skills for students' studies and future careers.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The KIT faculty of architecture takes a research-oriented approach to teaching. Networking with other universities in Karlsruhe (such as HfG, art academy) further expand the range of subjects. Innovative teaching formats such as simulations in the M 1:1 and Design to Build also shape the training in Karlsruhe. In addition to professional knowledge and skills, students are taught critical reflection and are instilled with a sense of responsibility for the built and natural environment.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The faculty has professorships with an international focus (e.g. international urban development) as well as international visiting professors, international course content, primarily in the form of design topics and seminars with a global background in teaching. The German-French double Master's degree programme in "Building and Planning in an International Context" enables students to obtain an academic degree from ENSAS Strasbourg at the same time, opening up further international opportunities. The Master's degree course in Architecture can be studied in English.

Special features regarding the equipment

5 study workshops with high-level technical equipment (workshops for modelling: Wood, metal, plastic - analogue and digital, photography); 2 plot pools open 24/7; Materials library with comprehensive database; Online architecture database "Architectural References"

Special features regarding research activities

The KIT faculty positions itself within the international research landscape with topics such as circular and climate-adjusted planning and building, sustainable materials and resources, digital methods, architectural criticism and curatorial practice. A unique feature is the close connection to the Archive for Architecture and Civil Engineering (borai), the largest architectural archive in Germany. With its unique collection of valuable original drawings and models, it represents an important institutional building block of the teaching and research programme.

Other special features

At the KIT faculty: Materials library with special focus on sustainable building materials. At KIT: Supplementary course in Science, Technology and Society; Supplementary course in Applied Cultural Studies; Supplementary course in Sustainable Development
