Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

We teach and research spatial design in architecture, urban planning and landscape planning in an interrelated context. The goal of developing space and society in a sustainable way connects all three subject areas. It is always important to question established practices. Through projects, workshops, excursions and practical semesters, we open students' eyes to the changing demands of social and professional realities. Project-oriented work in small groups and direct communication between teaching staff and students is essential.

Special features regarding the international orientation

We offer opportunities for intercultural exchange through international programmes for students, institutional collaborations and cooperation between individual disciplines. Institutional collaborations, partnerships and projects are long-term and often involve several departments of the University of Kassel. Our disciplines maintain numerous informal links with universities around the world. The department deepens and consolidates these partnerships through official formalisation.

Special features regarding the equipment

The computer laboratory in Department 06 (Architecture, Urban Planning and Landscape Planning – ASL) comprises four modern, well-equipped training and workrooms. 76 computers are available for students to use. The laboratories offer extensive opportunities for students to realise their own projects virtually with modern hardware and software. Equipment, technical support and course offerings enable education beyond subject-specific applications.

Special features regarding research activities

The department conducts research across the entire spectrum of planning, building and preservation of architecture, cities and landscapes – from nature conservation to construction robotics, from suburbanisation to the construction history of classical modernism, from gentrification to the development of new building materials, from animal-aided design to digital design methods, from the history of documenta to open space planning in climate change.

Other special features

The doku:lab is the documentation centre of the Department of Architecture, Urban Planning and Landscape Planning at the University of Kassel and offers the classic range of services of a Grey Room (archive of student work) for the department and much more, such as grey literature from institutions and authorities. The doku:lab is known to many under its former name Infosystem Planning (ISP)/Grey Room.
