Special features regarding teaching

We teach and conduct research into spatial design in architecture, urban planning and landscape planning in a reciprocal context. The goal of sustainably developing space and society combines all three subject areas. At the same time, established practices must always be subject to question . With projects, workshops, excursions and practical semesters, we sharpen the focus on the changing requirements of social and professional realities. Essential is the project-oriented work in small groups as well as direct interaction between instructors and students.

Special features regarding the international orientation

We offer opportunities for intercultural exchange through international programmes for students, institutional partnerships and cooperation between individual subject areas. Institutional cooperation, partnerships and projects are long-term and often involve multiple departments at the University of Kassel. Our research areas maintain numerous informal links with universities around the world. The department deepens and consolidates these cooperation arrangements through official formalisation.

Special features regarding the equipment

The computer laboratory in Department 06 (ASL) comprises four training and workrooms fitted with modern equipment. A total of 76 computers are available to students. The laboratories offer extensive possibilities for the virtual realisation of own projects with the aid of modern hardware and software. Equipment, technical support and course offerings permit training beyond subject-specific applications.

Special features regarding research activities

The department conducts research throughout the spectrum of planning, building and preservation of architecture, city and landscape – from nature conservation to construction robotics, from suburbanisation to the construction history of classical modernism, from gentrification to the development of new building materials, from animal-aided design to digital design methods, from the history of documenta to open-space planning in climate change.

Support for founders

UniKasselTransfer was established for this area among others to serve as a central facility at the University of Kassel.
