Further information provided by the department

Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The focus of the teaching is on design. The particularly spacious facilities of the FB15 building mean that it is open round the clock to enable student work to be carried out there as much as possible (in self-managed work rooms) and so with direct communication. The facilities are rounded off by an in-house IT department with its own print workshop, a professionally managed modelling workshop that is accessible to students, and an extensive library. Practical projects (self-building projects, such as AKA-Flieg, DELTA project, Building with Ben) take place on a regular basis.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Extensive collaboration with international universities in teaching and research; Generalist principle, broad disciplinary setup; Health-promoting urban design

Special features regarding the international orientation

The department has a strong international orientation. In addition to Erasmus and exchange programmes, the department maintains international partnerships within the framework of cooperative courses (e.g. summer schools, seminars, designs, workshops, etc.). From winter semester 2025/26, a bilingual MA degree course (German/English) will be offered. The department has been successfully participating in international student competitions for many years. Collaboration within the framework of UNITE! Will be further expanded.

Special features regarding the equipment

Lichtwiese printing centre; IT unit computer cluster; Student workshop with affiliated professional workshop with large-scale equipment (lasers, CNC milling machines, etc.); RoboLAB; 3D printing workshop; IT workspaces

Special features regarding research activities

Inter-disciplinary Research: EnEff Campus Lichtwiese; Emerging Cities; Centre for Critical Studies in Architecture (CCSA) – research collaboration with Goethe University Frankfurt and German Architecture Museum (DAM) Frankfurt. Graduate school: KRITIS – Critical Infrastructures. Design Research Build/self-building projects: Realisation of various projects (DELTA project, AKA), Health Games: Health-promoting urban design; Mobility Design; UrbanSCOPE. Digital Design: Computer-based design and digital fabrication/robotics; Finished part 2.0. Research Day; Organisation of Architecture Research Training Group; Wood/clay construction; Glass slide project

Other special features

The building is open 24/7/365 and is a kind of "home" for the students. This very much helps students identify with their studies. Everything is very close and personal, because the entire administration of services, including advice services etc. are all in the same building. Most of the students and teaching staff know each other personally. Student initiative and a cross-status group address individual topics on diversity, care and equality.
