Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Architecture at Berlin International (BI) is always practice-oriented, which means that architectural theory and architectural history are also examined in terms of their current or future applications. Teaching at BI is characterised by intensive supervision. Due to the comparatively small university and the comparatively small courses (usually with several teachers), the student-teacher ratio is comparatively low. The BA Architecture contains courses with an interdisciplinary profile in which students from different degree courses work together.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Architecture at Berlin International (BI) is always practice-oriented, which means that architectural theory and architectural history are also examined in terms of their current or future applications. At the Master's level, students from different degree courses come together in various impromptu formats. Numerous (project) courses lead to university-wide activities, such as exhibitions and excursions. In individual modules, representatives from (architectural) practice and society teach either as solo teachers or together with BI teachers.

Special features regarding the international orientation

BI is part of the BAU Global Network and maintains close contact with other member universities, especially with Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul. In addition, BI has numerous Erasmus partnerships as well as bilateral agreements with eight universities, e.g. in the UK, Japan and Mexico. Internationalisation "at home" is very advanced: Approx. 80% of students are from abroad (97 countries). This diversity is also reflected in the curriculum, where Eurocentric traditions of architecture and design education are increasingly being questioned.

Special features regarding the equipment

The workshops include a modelling workshop (wood), metal workshop, print and paint workshop with various circular, scroll and band (panel) saws, drills, polystyrene cutters, various grinding machines, etc., as well as a digital workshop with 3D printer, laser cutter, etc. The BI Photo Studio includes photo backgrounds; 2 LED photo lights as well as numerous cameras. The university library comprises around 16,000 media units, students have access to 118 research databases that provide access to 67,554 research journals funded under the German Research Foundation's (DFG) national licences.

Special features regarding research and development

Incentives for research activities (see 25.) apply to all professors and research assistants. Current projects are regularly presented and discussed in the research colloquium. Two examples of ongoing/recently completed research projects at Berlin International (BI): Prof. Pierre Escobar and Prof. Dr Giorgia Aquilar: "Constructive contingencies: Cuban architecture beyond the constraints of conformity"; Prof. Javier Martín; Dr Juan Pablo Ugarte (DAAD visiting lecturer): "The oculomotor correlates of the perception and appraisal of finishing materials in interior spaces"

Other special features

BI has a very diverse student body. More than 90 nations are represented on the campus among students and employees, both studies and administration are in English. A Women's Officer and a Diversity Officer are constantly working to create and maintain an inclusive working and studying environment for people of all genders, ethnicities, cultures, ages and abilities. Sustainability is a central component of the Architecture degree programme, as demonstrated by the central importance of recycling, the redevelopment of existing buildings and sustainable materials.
