Further information provided by the department

Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Inverted classroom in selected courses. Special teaching concepts, e.g. in the module "Fundamentals of Environmental Engineering", in the module "Sustainability and Material Cycles" (networked thinking and evaluation without pressure to achieve grades), in the module "Materials Engineering" (seminars) and in the module "Project" (project-based learning). Numerous excursions to well-known companies/opportunity to write theses with a company/practical semester/entry into studies with in-depth practical experience possible up to the third semester/optional project abroad.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Module "Simulation Game" (working on a real-life problem from industry over a semester), lively discourse among students/with lecturers (because of the optimal student-teacher ratio), opportunity to develop a profile in a selected area (energy process engineering, process engineering or environmental engineering), double degree option, guest lecturers from the partner university TU Brno (CZ)

Special features regarding the international orientation

English-language modules (optional); attractive offers for student stays abroad (semesters, projects lasting several weeks; Courses for the acquisition of linguistic, intercultural skills) at 40 partner universities abroad or as a free mover; Double Master's degree in Environmental and Process Engineering with TU Brno (CZ); Guest professorship of a professor at the TU Brno (CZ); (Visiting) lecturers from abroad; Activities under the scope of teaching, staff and student mobility

Special features regarding the equipment

State-of-the-art laboratories in the faculty and the centres of excellence at the Technology Centre Augsburg (TZA), Materials Resource Management (MRM) building in Augsburg and Institute for Textile Technology (ITA) with model factory "RecyclingAtelier" (recycling studio), bifa Environmental Institute and the Production Technology Centre (PTZ), from 2025 also at the Technology Transfer Centre Gersthofen (digital innovations in lightweight construction for hydrogen-based technologies); Modern media technology in the lecture halls; Online teaching (Zoom, Moodle, etc.); Equipment loans (e.g. iPads); High-performance computer clusters; Free software licenses for students

Special features regarding research and development

Various research fields, including: Composites in mechanical engineering, project examples: Development of hydrogen pressure tanks from CFRP, CMC production from natural raw materials and recycled materials. At the Institute of Textile Technology: Research on carbon and textile recycling. Research on production engineering and factory planning in the model factory "Plant 1" (research in the field of factory planning and PPC) of the OITC. Research projects in the field of chemical process engineering: e.g. catalyst development for more sustainable reactions or low-cost sensor development for determining water parameters

Other special features

The faculty sees it as its task to impart central values (tolerance, sustainability, etc.) to its students and to raise awareness through their studies, e.g. through lectures and projects, for the fact that engineers can solve problems with their technical and scientific expertise. Examples include small projects such as "Barrier-free Balcony" or long-term to permanent projects such as "West and Central African Future Group" (WACAF), "Precious Plastic" (https://www.tha.de/HSA-transfer). The Technical University of Applied Sciences (THA) is a partner university for fire brigades and aid organisations.
