Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Comprehensive advisory services through strong networking of specialist study advice with numerous other advisory bodies and the professors; Very good cooperation between students and teaching staff, for example in committees and course development; very committed and skilled departmental student organisation; Individual course planning and monitoring; Small groups, numerous tutorials, very good support ratio; numerous collaborations in teaching and research, including with institutes of the Faculty of Medicine.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Practice- and research-oriented teaching that prepares students specifically for industry and scientific research. The current teaching incubator in Ulm is setting new standards with innovative formats such as portfolio assessment in peer reviews. Students work in small groups, which promotes exchange and enables individual supervision. The English-language teaching in the Master's degree programme and the interdisciplinary orientation also create an international atmosphere. A required industrial work placement strengthens practical relevance and supports students in starting their career.

Special features regarding the international orientation

There are two other English-language, international Master's degree programmes in the department, and there are a total of 8 English-language and internationally oriented master's programmes within the Faculty of Natural Sciences. Participation in international trade fairs, efforts made to increase internationalisation in the faculty's bachelor's degree courses.

Special features regarding the equipment

New appointments have enabled the establishment of state-of-the-art laboratories and special test facilities in which practical experiments are carried out. Furthermore, the latest simulation tools are used to systematically incorporate experiment results into the design of equipment and processes.

Special features regarding research activities

The Cluster of Excellence for Battery Research (POLiS) makes the scientific city of Ulm a future hub for high-performance, reliable batteries and fuel cells. To cope with the energy and raw material transition, the department also conducts research at the interface of fundamentals and applied research in order to optimise separation processes and establish new chemical findings on a technical scale. This also includes the design and optimisation of (photo)chemical processes and reactors as well as research into photocatalytically active materials (Collaborative Research Centre CataLight).
