Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

You will work in modern laboratories, participate in real-life projects and get to know the latest technologies in biotechnology. Our lecturers are experienced experts in their field and will support you on your journey. The degree course is strongly oriented towards professional practice. Theoretical lectures and seminars are supplemented by numerous laboratory practicals as well as regular excursions to relevant industrial companies.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The degree courses teach in-depth biotech know-how in an interdisciplinary and scientifically oriented manner. Whether you want to do research later or go into production – Biberach University of Applied Sciences' (HBC) professional support in the field of biotechnology will help you choose the right career path and also set the right course for your future success in your studies. We collaborate with the University of Ulm in the implementation of the Master's degree programmes. Students can use the programmes of both universities, which further expands their development opportunities

Special features regarding the international orientation

By combining a study semester and practical semester abroad, students gain valuable international experience in theory and practice and acquire important intercultural skills in addition to foreign language skills. Through the integrated study semester abroad, students can deepen their study focus or choose additional study focus areas, thus gaining interdisciplinary qualifications. During the practical semester abroad, students work in an international team.

Special features regarding the equipment

The laboratory equipment of the Institute for Applied Biology (IAB) enables external and internal research, development and contract work. The research groups are thematically and technically oriented toward the common thread of the manufacturing process for biopharmaceuticals and work in an interdisciplinary manner. The IAB has expertise in numerous disciplines, including molecular biology, genetic engineering, microbiology, fermentation and cell culture technology.

Special features regarding research and development

The Institute of Applied Biotechnology complements the faculty's degree courses with a corresponding research programme. The core competence of the institute is the manufacturing process for both biopharmaceutical and industrial biotechnological products. The institute's laboratories cover the complete biotechnological manufacturing process from the establishment of cell lines and microorganisms to fermentation and protein purification to protein analysis. The state-of-the-art equipment in the laboratories makes it possible to work on future-oriented projects

Other special features

The aim is to organise university operations to be net greenhouse gas neutral by 2030 and thus actively contribute to the energy transition and act as a pilot project for other institutions. Biberach University of Applied Sciences (HBC) is guided by the climate protection goals of the state of Baden-Württemberg and, in particular, by the exemplary role that state-owned properties are expected to play.
