Special features regarding teaching

Our degree courses ensure: individual support, quick contact with lecturers, access to interactive e-learning tools and excellent career prospects. The relevance to professional practice is very important, especially in Materials Engineering (high degree of practical training at and outside the university). The materials sciences are inter-facultative and link four promising areas (Materials Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Natural Sciences and Electrical Engineering. The Master's degree course in Metallurgical Engineering is taught completely in English and contributes significantly to the internationalisation of RWTH.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Master's degree course in Metallurgical Engineering is taught completely in English and contributes significantly to the internationalisation of RWTH. As the teaching content is integrated with that of the degree courses held in German, students on these courses can also benefit from international orientation. Additionally, exchange programmes such as ERASMUS+ and departmental collaborations have been and continue to be expanded with a view to fostering and increasing student mobility. In the field of research, our Chairs cooperate with a large number of international partners.

Special features regarding the equipment

The nine institutes in the department have highly modern technical equipment for basic research and practice-based research into materials. Students benefit from the equipment in the laboratories and workshops in a wide variety of internal practicals at the university. From the PVD coating chamber to the 3D laser doppler anemometer and the top-blown converter through to access to the Ernst Ruska centre (electron microscopy) and to the Jugene mainframe at Forschungszentrum Jülich, students and researchers equally benefit from innovative equipment for material analysis.

Special features regarding research activities

2 Clusters of Excellence (Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries, Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass), 1 EU Cluster (KIC) and 3 Collaborative Research Centres (Plasma, Steel Ab Initio, Precision Manufacturing by Controlling Melt). Through JaraEnergy, StrucMat and CorroNet there is close cooperation with Forschungszentrum Jülich, the German Aerospace Centre (DLR), Dechema and the Max Planck Institute. There are two affiliated institutes: ACCESS and ÖFI, as well as collaborations within RWTH: 2 profile areas (Materials Science and Engineering, Production Engineering), AixViPMaP, Aec, AKR, CHAMP.
