Special features regarding teaching

Application-oriented degree course with balanced teaching of practical and theoretical skills; Extensive training in laboratories for the consolidation and application of learnt content; Project work/Bachelor’s thesis/Master’s thesis with predominantly industry-related tasks and practice-oriented research projects.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The department maintains contacts with more than 45 partner universities worldwide. This gives students a wide range of opportunities to gain international experience and make contacts during a semester abroad. Some professors teach in partner universities all over the world. There are also international guest lecturers and numerous incomings to enrich the students in the department. The first two semesters of the Bachelor’s degree course in Mechatronics and Robotics can be studied in English.

Automotive Systems Engineering: Drive test bench for the research and development of electrified drives; Driving simulator lab; Exhaust gas measuring systems; Laboratories in the fields of electronics, measurement technology, system dynamics, sensor systems, electromobile systems, driver information systems, embedded systems, computer science Mechatronics and robotics: Scanning electron microscope, laboratory for technical optics with spectral photometer and laser interferometer, digital image processing, rapid prototyping system, injection moulding machine for micromechanical components, modular concept factory, industrial robot.

Test field for autonomous driving; Artificial Intelligence (field of application: Automated driving, environmental perception, industrial process monitoring); Image Processing; Communication car-to-car or car-to-infrastructure; Sensor development; Range extender for electric vehicles; Electromobility in rural-urban areas; Adaptive software and system architecture for driver assistance systems; Economic Cruise Control (ECC); Process development for the production of wear-resistant, micro-structured plastic components; Solution methods in fluid mechanics; Additive manufacturing; Bionics.

Support for founders

In the Master’s courses in Automotive Systems Engineering as well as Mechatronics and Robotics, a focus on entrepreneurship has been available for selection since winter semester 2021/22. In addition, the start-up centre STARTKLAR offers courses and workshops on the topic of start-up and assists students with general start-up questions.

Other special features

Since 2014, students in the department have participated in the Formula Student competition, in which various teams of students compete in international competitions with racing cars they have designed, constructed and built themselves.
