Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

With eight professorships and over 1,200 students, we are one of the largest Romance Studies institutes in the German-speaking world. Romance Studies in Bochum has an excellent international network and offers a comprehensive range of courses in the three Romance languages French, Italian and Spanish in Bachelor's, Master's and teacher training programmes, as well as language certificates in Catalan and Portuguese. Our high level of commitment to teaching is particularly evident at the interface between studies and career with the highly frequented projects in the Alfried-Krupp student laboratory.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Special features regarding the international orientation

The study of Romance Languages is by its nature internationally oriented. Compulsory stays abroad are an integral part of the degree course. In general, credits earned abroad are recognised in the context of the applicable study and examination regulations and may be assessed according to the ECTS. There are more than 53 cooperation agreements with European higher education institutions under the Erasmus programme. Special features regarding the equipment

For the implementation of the degree programmes, material and spatial resources as well as the infrastructure of the university (e.g. department library, university library) are available. All practical rooms and lecture theatres are equipped with multimedia. Online and hybrid scenarios can also be easily implemented thanks to the WiFi infrastructure.

Special features regarding research activities

Participation in the faculty-wide research focuses "Linguistic Multilingualism Research", "Sustainabilities. Practice – Discourse – Culture" and "Teaching for a Society in Transformation" in the form of sub-projects of the German Research Foundation (DFG), Humboldt, Thyssen Foundation and Hans Böckler Foundation. In addition, co-application for "Professional School of International Education" (PiStEn) with, among others, Graz, Quito, Oulu in the DAAD funding programme lehramt.international.

Other special features

In the Ruhr University Alliance (UA Ruhr), the Romance Studies seminars of the Universität Duisburg-Essen and the Ruhr-Universität work closely together. Students enrolled at one of the UA Ruhr universities can take courses at the partner university and credit them to the degree course in Romance Studies. Participation in the master's degree "Empirical Multilingualism".
