Special features regarding teaching

Bachelor's and Master's degree course with broad basic training in (bio)catalysis, environmental chemistry, analytics, technical chemistry, modern synthesis methods in inorganic and organic chemistry, modelling, physical chemistry, among others - many options for in-depth study; supervision of beginners in small groups; mentoring programme; good contact with professors and lecturers; short distances; numerous opportunities for work as a student assistant in the university and non-university institutions; regular evaluation of courses by students.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Within the framework of the compulsory elective subjects in the third subject-related semester of the Master's degree course in Chemistry, students can complete a semester abroad as an alternative to the examination plan and curriculum. For this purpose, students first select a topic to focus on corresponding to the practical research assignment. The Akademische Auslandsamt (International Office) and our academic advisor and Erasmus officer can provide guidance and support to those interested in studying abroad. There are also numerous collaborations with working groups abroad in which students can also participate.

Special features regarding the equipment

The institute has very good facilities thanks to new-build and conversion work, plus many new professorships and a high level of third-party funding. The institute is equipped with modern research equipment, e.g. diffractometer, NMR, IR, Raman, DSC, TGA, MS, HPLC, GC, GC-MS, computer cluster and a materials lab. Fast WiFi/Internet in all rooms. New and very well-equipped library. The Südstadt campus also has one of the best cafeterias in Germany.

Support for founders

In the lecture Technical Chemistry the compilation of production costs is discussed by means of examples. The role of patent protection and IP strategies is covered in various lectures. The Centre for Entrepreneurship and the Graduate Academy offer corresponding courses, which can also be taken by students as part of their electives.

Other special features

Introduction for first-semester students, mandatory field trips to centres of the chemical industry, professors actively participate in the negotiation of jobs in industry, lectures and block courses from experts from industry, training in rhetoric and presentation techniques.
