Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Biology (BSc): First through fourth semester: interdisciplinary teaching (between the biological areas of the department); fifth through sixth semester: Focus on molecular biology topics in teaching and teaching methods; English as a compulsory module for the acquisition of skills in technical English; Collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine. ILS (BSc): interdisciplinary training (Biology/Physics/Mathematics),; interdisciplinary modules; Training at intersections between the three disciplines: Quantitative description of biological processes, bioimaging, systems biology, structural biology.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

ILS (English): interdisciplinary training (Biology/Physics/Mathematics),; integrated modules (lecturers from different departments teach together); Cell and Molecular Biology: research-oriented training in Cell And Molecular Biology; very broad range of methods; Small group sizes; UNIcert III (English for Natural Scientist, C1 level); Integrated Immunology (English): basic and clinical-translational teaching,; problem-oriented learning,; research-oriented,; interdisciplinary (Medicine/Biology)

Special features regarding the international orientation

With Integrated Life Sciences and Integrated Immunology, two international, English-language Master's degree programmes have been established. In the elite Integrated Immunology degree programme (Bavarian Elite Network), a semester abroad is an integral part of the curriculum. Students have access to partnerships with foreign universities (e.g. Erasmus partnerships) for individually organised exchange semesters.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

University of Oslo, Norway; Luxembourg Institute of Health, Luxembourg; The Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology Oxford, UK; University of Antwerp, Antwerpen; Imperial College London; University of Gothenburg, Sweden; Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in NYC, USA; The Westmead Institute for Medical Research, Sydney, Australia; University of Basel, Switzerland; ERASMUS MC, Rotterdam, Netherlands

Special features regarding the equipment

FACS analysers and sorting devices; Various confocal microscopes; Various mass spectrometers for proteome and metabolome analyses; Supercomputer; Patch-clamps; Databases on plant genetics resources; Hemocytometer; Transgenic mouse unit (oocyte and blastocyst injection systems with built-in stereo microscopes)

Special features regarding research activities

Research Training Group 2162 (DFG); Research Training Group 2504 (DFG); Research Training Group 2599 (DFG); Collaborative Research Centre CRC 1181 (DFG); Collaborative Research Centre CRC 1540 (DFG); Transregio TRR 221 (DFG); Transregio TRR 305 (DFG); BayKlimaFit (funded by the Bavarian State Ministry for Environment and Consumer Protection); CASS: Improved cassava yield (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation).

Other special features

close cooperation with the faculty of Medicine as well as the departments of Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry. For example, in the Bachelor of Biology and Master of Cell and Molecular Biology modules from the Faculty of Medicine (Immunology, Virology, Human Genetics) and the Faculty of Science (Organic Chemistry, Paleobiology) can be taken. Integrated Life Sciences and Integrated Immunology (funded by the Elite Network of Bavaria) are interdisciplinary degree programmes (ILS: Biology/Physics and Mathematics; Immune: Biology/Faculty of Medicine), which offer interdisciplinary education.
