A special feature of the teaching in all three courses offered is the high in relation to practice in the form of so-called "project modules”. Here the focus is placed on intensive methodology training; knowledge of the field of Geography is also taught and deepened using current issues. Furthermore, module blocks are taught by external lecturers who are well networked in professional practice so that contact to possible work placements can be gained, in addition to a diverse range of course offerings.

Two computer labs for about 30 students each; software licenses for Geographic Information Systems that also allow students to use them at home; drones for use in GIS study projects; recently upgraded Physical Geography (Geomorphology) teaching lab including modern equipment for field excursions/student field research.

Research focuses in particular on economic geography/network research, development and security, geotourism, energy transition and spatial planning, evaluation methodology in urban and spatial planning, weather extremes and climate change, and soil and paleoenvironmental research. In the field of geography didactics, research focuses on innovative teaching and learning methods in geography lessons.

Support for business start-ups is provided throughout the university by the Department of Economics (Entrepreneurship Cluster Mittelhessen), and students from the Economic Geography department in particular regularly take advantage of the offers.
