Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

A special feature of the teaching is the high in relation to practice in the form of so-called "project modules”. Here the focus is placed on intensive methodology training. Knowledge of the field of Geography is also taught and deepened using current issues. Furthermore, module components are taught by external professors, who have good professional networks which allow for connections between various teaching offerings and possible internship positions.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Special features regarding the international orientation

Strong international research activities exist in the areas of geographic development research and geographic conflict research. This mainly includes the reconstruction of conflict regions (Afghanistan and Syria) as well as development research in sub-Saharan Africa (including Namibia and Malawi). In particular, students also have the opportunity in cooperation with Africa to go on excursions and exchanges.

Special features regarding the equipment

Two computer rooms, each with a capacity of approx. 30 students; Software licenses for Geographic Information Systems, which can also be used by students at home; Drones for use in GIS study projects; recently updated teaching laboratory in the Physical Geography (Geomorphology) department, including modern equipment for field excursions/student field research.

Special features regarding research activities

The research focuses in particular on the areas of economic geography/network research, development and security, geotourism, energy transition and regional planning, evaluation methodology in urban and regional planning, weather extremes and climate change as well as soil and paleoenvironmental research. In the field of geography didactics, innovative teaching and learning methods in teaching geography are at the forefront of research.
