Special features regarding teaching

The subject has a distinctly international orientation. In addition to the usual standards such as the integration of English literature into teaching, presence at international conferences and seminars, etc. - among other things, this is also reflected in the obligatory stay abroad at a partner university and the possible double degree in the Master TRP, the high presence of visiting professors (also from China, for example), the long-standing offer of guest lectures by international professors in the lecture series Space-Economy-Society (acquisition of ECTS possible) or also the excursions. In addition, the KU's International Office offers a wide range of services.

Special features regarding the equipment

The subject is perfectly equipped in terms of infrastructure: Own computer room with state-of-the-art and extensive equipment in the fields of GIS (ArcGIS, SAGA, Cloud Compare, Riscan, LIS), remote sensing, statistics, media; own Geo lab, terrestrial laser scanner, dGPS, tachymeters, UAV/drones for aerial photography, all-terrain vehicles; own Geomedia lab enables the execution of audio-visual projects and the production of films. There are two cartography workstations with state-of-the-art equipment for the production of graphic products, maps and books.

Special features regarding research activities

The research activities of the subject area are oriented towards Leisure and Tourism, Environmental Processes and Natural Hazards, Global Justice and Sustainability at the internat. Research Front. Additional focal points are floodplain research and geogr. development research, as well as regional development, entrepreneurship, finance/financialisation. In the scientific community, members of the department hold important positions in research and science management and are recognised by numerous high-profile publications (including textbooks).

Support for founders

The "Centre for Entrepreneurship" of the KU, headed by a member of the department (holder of the chair of tourism), is of central importance here. In fact, several successful start-ups have already emerged from the subject by former employees, e.g. TourismusZukunft. Accordingly, there is basically broad experience with start-ups.

Other special features

The courses of Geography are characterised by a very strong integration of theory and practice. The focus within this is the impartation of both theoretical concepts and models as well as their critical understanding and application-oriented implementation.
