Special features regarding teaching

In each of the degree courses, the department offers a high degree of practical training and, in the Master's courses, more than 50% in some cases. The Master's courses are internationally and research-oriented. The Bachelor's degree courses offer an extensive range of subjects, preparing students for the consecutive Master's courses more generally in the first two years and more specifically in the third year with freely selectable advanced modules. All degree courses are subject to a quality assurance system. Close contact is cultivated to companies and practitioners.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Every year, the English-language Master's courses attract a high percentage (approx. 50%) of international students who are prepared for studying in the department through welcoming structures and information events. Student mentors support international students in their search for accommodation or with pending bureaucratic regulations. Mobility windows and moderate credit transfer procedures facilitate the process for studying in other countries for students enrolled at Jena.

Special features regarding research activities

Research in the Faculty of Biosciences focuses on three main areas: microbial communication, biodiversity and evolution, and regulation of age-associated processes. There is a close cooperation of the non-university research institutes, e.g. HKI, FLI and also MPIs with the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. The integration into the ongoing research projects offers students excellent conditions for carrying out internships, writing a thesis and a subsequent doctoral and post-doctoral phase.

Other special features

The Friedrich Schiller University is successful with the cluster "Balance of the Microverse" (research cluster on dynamic equilibria of microbial communities) in the excellence strategy of the federal and state governments. The cluster shows the research strength at the location in the linkage of the university working groups from 5 faculties with the non-university research institutes in Jena. Other special features in Jena include "iDiv - German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research" (with the Universities of Halle and Leipzig) and the IMPULS project on ageing research.
