Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

In addition to classic courses such as lectures, exercises and seminars, a variety of different teaching and learning methods are used in teaching (e.g. flipped classroom, gamification in teaching scenarios, artificial intelligence in teaching and learning scenarios, open educational resources). This helps support and encourage different types of learners. Practical relevance is established through institute work placements, excursions and project work.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

In addition to classic courses such as lectures, exercises and seminars, a variety of different teaching and learning methods are used in teaching (e.g. flipped classroom, gamification in teaching scenarios, artificial intelligence in teaching and learning scenarios, open educational resources). This helps support and encourage different types of learners. Practical relevance is established through interdisciplinary project modules as well as work on current topics in interdisciplinary teams.

Special features regarding the international orientation

There is a double degree Master's programme with the Czech Technical University in Prague (the T.I.M.E. Double degree programme). This is offered for the Master's degree programme in industrial engineering specialising in civil engineering, especially for the specialisation in structural civil engineering, but is not compulsory.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

The University of Osaka; University of California, Davis; Universidade de Coimbra; Politecnico di Milano; Chalmers tekniska högskola; Universitat Politècnica de València; Kungliga Tekniska högskolan (KTH); Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zürich; Prague University of Economics and Business; Tsinghua University.

Special features regarding the equipment

The department has a large number of offerings. Examples include: The Institute of Road Construction Engineering has an asphalt test track and a living lab at the Jackerath motorway junction. The environmental analytical laboratory at the Aachen Soers sewage treatment plant and the hydraulic engineering hall with a test facility for dam construction, sediment transport and simulation of flood events are now used as a spin-off throughout the EU.

Special features regarding research activities

There are cooperation arrangements with both the Aachen University of Applied Sciences and the Jülich Research Centre (research institutions in the area). Theses are regularly written and work placements conducted with the Jülich Research Centre. There are numerous interdisciplinary research projects with national and international partners at the chair or institute level. Students benefit from this diversity, in which research results are in turn incorporated into the teaching, thus providing students with up-to-date insights.

Other special features

The overarching topics of sustainability, environment, climate change, resource scarcity as well as digitalisation can be found in all five research areas and hence in the courses offered by the department as well. In addition, there is a separate chair on Sustainability in Building and Construction and Gender and Diversity in Engineering.
