Special features regarding teaching

In addition to features regarding content, especially the teaching methods practised contribute to the profile of the courses of study. The main objectives are: Guidance on independent work, teaching of inter-disciplinary and networked thinking, promotion of communication skills, project management, leadership qualification and team-oriented behaviour, ability to think in an abstract, analytical way and to work scientifically . This is achieved by a good student-teacher ratio in the lectures with 40 to 70 participants in the Bachelor's degree and with 20 participants in the Master's courses.

Special features regarding the equipment

14 lecture theatres, each with a network computer for the lecturer, two projectors, microphones, central media control, whiteboards or blackboards; some lecture theatres have video projection, smartboards, overhead projectors; sockets/network sockets and WiFi access set up everywhere for student laptops; 14 labs for practicals, tutorials and free practice, admission possible 24/7 with chip card; one laboratory room with educational network; four project rooms for project groups, two seminar rooms, one photocopying room; mobile devices such as PDAs and mobile phones for project work and Master theses.

Special features regarding research and development

The faculty is involved in the research institutes HSA_innos (Innovative Security) and HSA_ired (Resource Efficient Data Transfer and Data Processing) in terms of personnel and through high third-party funding, and has four independent research groups: Distributed Systems, Efficient Embedded Systems, Automation in Usability Engineering, and Network Technologies/Applications. Through cooperation with university and industrial partners, it opens up a wide range of opportunities for its young scientists, from international publications to successful doctorates.

Support for founders

The Faculty of Computer Science is home to the start-up initiative HSA_digit. Since 2017, the HSA_digit team has been supporting university founders from the initial idea to a highly competitive business model. In addition to a wide range of start-up-related teaching and project formats, HSA_digit also offers a regular start-up consultation hour and the incubator programme Digital Juniors. Currently, HSA_digit employs 5 scientific full-time staff. Full-time employees. Furthermore, several professors of the faculty are involved in the promotion of start-ups. With success: Since 2017, 5 out of 8 Exist grants have come to FKI alone.

Other special features

The Faculty of Computer Science considers its main task to be the education of the students. Within this, the active and independent work of the students, in addition to the quality of teaching and the subject-specific qualifications, is at the foreground. The Faculty of Computer Science supports qualitatively good teaching in all fields of Computer Science including related fields and strives to achieve the coexistence of practice-oriented teaching and applied practice-related research.
