Special features regarding teaching

The Institute of Psychology at the University of Heidelberg offers a consecutive Bachelor’s and Master´s degree programmes in psychology for 90 students each. The Master´s degree programme optionally focuses on "Organizational Behaviour and Adaptive Cognition" or "Developmental and Clinical Psychology". One of the institute's key research areas is self-regulation. The Institute of Psychology thus forms a central component of the German Universities Excellence Initiative-funded "Field of Focus 4: self-regulation and regulation" at the University of Heidelberg.

Special features regarding the international orientation

We put students in contact with leading figures in our field by appointing internationally renowned experts. Our honorary professors include Robert Kail (Purdue University, developmental psychology), Andreas Schleicher (OECD Paris, educational psychology), Robert Sternberg (Cornell University, cognitive psychology), Kathleen Vohs (University of Minnesota, social psychology) & Allan Wigfield (University of Maryland, motivational psychology). Periods abroad via Erasmus and other exchange programmes are explicitly encouraged and energetically promoted.

Special features regarding the equipment

The institute has a large number of computer workstations and has its own library. A behavioural laboratory completed in 2018 offers students good conditions for computer-based research projects. There are special laboratories for eye movement studies, physiological measurements and EEG analysis.

Special features regarding research activities

Numerous research projects (German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, German Research Foundation, EU) offer students the opportunity to collaborate as assistants. Theses (Bachelor's, Master's degree) are often integrated in projects. Through the topic of "Self-regulation", one of the university's four key areas of the Excellence Initiative is primarily based in the Psychology Department.

Other special features

The Psychological Institute accommodates a psychotherapy university outpatient clinic and the training institute "Centre for Psychological Psychotherapy". This enables practice-oriented teaching in clinical psychology. There are many attractive applications beyond the field of psychotherapy, including in the areas of work, health and teaching.
