Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Individual specialisation is possible (compulsory elective module structure), especially in the third year of the Bachelor's degree programme. Promotion of academic skills through courses which take place alongside thesis writing, in which academic work is taught. Interdisciplinary reference subjects (medicine, sports, economics, etc.) as well as acquisition of language skills are possible. Promotion of international student/teaching staff mobility. Strong links between research and teaching, partly with an international focus.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Promotion of academic skills through courses which take place alongside thesis writing, in which academic work is taught. Interdisciplinary reference subjects (medicine, sports, economics) as well as acquisition of language skills. Promotion of international student/teaching staff mobility. Strong links between research and teaching, partly with an international focus. A fast-track doctorate programme is available for qualified students.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Numerous international academics are active in the department. This includes individual academic lectures and also longer research and teaching visits in the department. In addition, there are research networks such as the Collaborative Research Centres in "Mechanisms of Perception and Adaptation" and internationally oriented German Research Foundation (DFG) priority programmes and international German Research Foundation (DFG) graduate programmes. The Department promotes the participation of students in Erasmus programmes and builds partnerships with other higher education institutions abroad.

Special features regarding the equipment

The department has outstanding infrastructure (workshop: Precision engineering, printing facilities, electrical engineering, 3D printer and more). The Bender Institute for Neuroscience (BION) is also affiliated with the latest 3 Tesla magnetic resonance tomography devices. The FB has a biochemical, molecular genetic laboratory in which, for example, concentrations of hormones, neurotransmitters and genetic parameters (SNPs,VNTR, etc.) can be measured - also by students. Numerous eye-trackers and a laboratory for spatial orientation (virtual reality) are also available.

Special features regarding research activities

Large collaborative projects (e.g. Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio 135/International Research Training Group 1901); Currently four ongoing ERC grants. Justus Liebig University (JLU) Giessen cutting-edge research area "Mechanisms of Perception and Adaptation". Participated in the LOEWE DYNAMIC Centre funded by the State of Hesse as well as a large number of funded individual projects. Member of the Mittelhessen Research Campus (FCMH); Core Facility Bender Institute of Neuroimaging at the department. Exceptional laboratory equipment (e.g. measurement of EEG and peripheral physiology, eye tracking and VR laboratories) as well as scanners (FMRI).

Other special features

Postgraduate training: Psychological psychotherapy - focus on behavioural therapy; Child and adolescent psychotherapy (VT); Continuing education course in Neuropsychology is under development; Further training course in Special Pain Psychotherapy is under development; Active involvement in teacher training (all teacher training degree courses) and thus educational support, commitment to psychological counselling of all JLU students (promotion of mental health). High level of internationality among young academics.
