Further information provided by the department

Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The department has its own Study Centre with individual supervision. Well-developed writing coaching (writing workshop; Internet portals: "Bremen Writing Coach", "The Academic Writer's Workbench") as well as measures of the BMBF initiative "Bildung in Sprache und Schrift" (Education in written and spoken language) support the learning process. A close link between research and teaching is achieved early on via research-based learning projects. The curriculum is developed in study committees with equal representation of students.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The department has an Erasmus coordination and accreditation office, which organises the stay abroad for incoming and outgoing students. The Erasmus Mundus Programme "German Literature of the Middle Ages in a European Context", the international Master's programme "Transnational Literary Studies" as well as regular summer academies attract foreign students and academics to the department. Firm commitment to acquiring doctoral scholarships, Fulbright and Humboldt guest lecturers ensure an intensive international exchange.

Special features regarding the equipment

The department offers its own CIP pool and learning rooms, some with additional PC workstations. Modern media technology is either located in the classrooms themselves or is available for mobile use via a media centre. There are also workstations available for student groups with media/technical computer equipment across the university.

Special features regarding research activities

The department's research focuses in particular on interdisciplinary research, including "Postcolonial Literary/Cultural/Language Studies" [literary studies, cultural studies and linguistics] – "Subject-related Educational Processes in Transformation" [subject-related didactics] – "Blue Humanities" [literary studies and cultural studies], "Text Production/Writing Research" [applied linguistics, subject-specific didactics] and "Linguistic Education" [subject-specific didactics]. The joint research project "Worlds of Contradiction" contextualises the humanities across disciplines.

Other special features

Department 10 is one of the departments with the greatest diversity of students at the University of Bremen. Teaching staff are involved in the context of the NKK (Sustainability, Climate Justice, Climate Neutrality) mission statement of the University of Bremen.
