Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Teaching and learning take place largely in seminars and exercises and offer a good working atmosphere as well as intensive exchange. E-learning is used comprehensively as a supplementary teaching method (in particular via a learning platform). The elective options and subject-related combination options allow for the development of individual profiles. In terms of content, the subject of Educational Science at Ruhr University Bochum offers an innovative area of focus that considers school and extracurricular learning in the context of digital media as a special feature.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Teaching and learning take place exclusively in seminars and exercises in small groups. This creates a very good working atmosphere and promotes intensive exchange between teaching staff and students. E-learning is used comprehensively as a supplementary teaching method (in particular via a learning platform). Among other things, the Master's degree programme addresses current topics of teaching and learning in extracurricular contexts and links them to questions of digitalisation.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The department has international research partnerships and is a member of the Society of the Learning Sciences. As part of this membership, students have the opportunity to participate in (digital) congresses and guest lectures. There are opportunities for students abroad – at European universities, but also in Australia, East Asia and Latin America, for example. The Institute of Educational Science participates in the international university consortium UNIC – European University of Post-Industrial Cities.

Special features regarding the equipment

Eduroam is available throughout the university. There are several rooms with video conferencing technology. All lecture theatres and seminar rooms are equipped with a media console, a ceiling projector, a screen and a sound system. There is a seminar room that contains only PC workstations. A mobile smart board is available. In the departmental library, there are 10 internet-enabled workstations and a media lounge including 10 tablets available for use. In addition, there is a scanner with special software for processing the scans.

Special features regarding research activities

The institute's research focuses on the fields of general educational science, school and teaching research and extracurricular educational research. These are divided into 13 areas of work (including psychological, historical and adult education research). The institute's research strength is demonstrated by the third-party funding it has received and the diversity of funding institutions. Close cooperation with other research institutions allows for a strong international exchange.

Other special features

We promote fair and equal cooperation between staff and students of different nationalities, religions, genders and sexual orientations. Our research is dedicated to inclusive education for all people and our teaching aims to promote people in the spirit of democratic community building.
