Special features regarding teaching

A special feature of the WiWi course at JLU Giessen is the flexibility in terms of content. Students choose their major (specialisation) individually using compulsory elective modules. This allows the course to be designed according to personal strengths and preferences. In the two-semester orientation phase, at the beginning of the course, important Business Administration, Economics and Methodological fundamentals are taught. The assessment of these modules is only included in the final grade if desired. It is also possible to integrate modules from other faculties and from international universities into the degree course.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The faculty has close partnerships and exchange programmes with 16 partner universities in Europe, the USA and China. Further collaborations are constantly being driven forward. For students, the faculty offers the opportunity to acquire a double degree (in the Master’s). A stay abroad can be easily integrated into your studies. There are also “Business English” courses and numerous language courses. In the field of research, there is a lively international exchange thanks to joint research projects.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

International University of Business and Economics in Peking, China; University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, USA; Kansas State University, USA; Universidad de Granada, Spanien; Karlstad University, Schweden; Universidad de Huelva, Spanien; Universidad de Cantabria, Santander, Spanien; Université de Montpellier, Frankreich; Universität Lodz, Polen; Istanbul Kültür Universität Istanbul, Türkei.

Special features regarding the equipment

The department has its own computer lab on campus. Subject-specific databases are available for research and research-related seminar projects and final theses. Refinitiv Workspace (including Datastream) and S&P Capital IQ. In addition, JLU students can access discounted or free software (e.g. SPSS, Mathematica, Citavi, Corel, and much more). The lecture halls, seminar rooms and the branch library on the campus have been renovated and equipped with high-quality technology.

Special features regarding research activities

In the faculty, two research networks are currently working on the topics: "Behavioural and Social Finance & Accounting" and "Digitalization". In addition, an international conference is held annually in the area of "Behavioural Research in Finance, Governance and Accounting". The faculty would like to distinguish itself in particular in the two priority areas "Responsible Leadership & Corporate Governance" and "Data Driven Economy". The faculty has modern research labs for experimental research (including eye tracking).

Support for founders

The Entrepreneurship Cluster Mittelhessen (ECM) is the start-up centre of the Justus Liebig University in Gießen and is directly linked to the Department of Economics. It supports students in implementing their innovative ideas in the context of a business start-up. The ECM organizes workshops, seminars and start-up events (e.g. IdeaSlam). With the start-up advice, the ECM helps with the creation of business plans and provides information on funding opportunities.

Other special features

The faculty promotes equality and empowerment of all genders. Among other things, it supports female students in the Women@FB02 programme and offers various gender and diversity courses for all students. Sustainability is a central topic in many lectures and seminars. An example of this is the new lecture "Sustainability in Economics", which will be offered from the winter semester 2022/23. Many sustainability projects have already been carried out (flower meadow, photovoltaic system, renovation).
