Special features regarding teaching

The University of Bremen has long pursued the concept of learning through research. The courses in the Production Technology department contain mandatory projects that are also offered across courses. Students are specifically prepared for jobs in engineering. The diversity of projects reflects the diversity of the research and work of industrial engineers. The initial study phase is supported by open learning groups, which are closely supported and guided by tutors.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The high proportion of international professors and visiting lecturers in both faculties and the large number of large research institutes (including Fraunhofer, Leibniz, DLR) support the international orientation of the programme. Individual design options for stays abroad (studies, internships) based on existing cooperations are available.

Special features regarding the equipment

The Department of Production Technology, with its specialist areas and associated institutes, covers a very broad and varied spectrum from basic research to applied research. There are sometimes unique technical facilities available for this. Examples are ZARM's world-renowned drop tower, where experiments are carried out in weightlessness, and the MAPEX Equipment Centre, where innovative materials are developed and characterised, e.g. for biomedical applications or for use in the aerospace industry.

Special features regarding research activities

The faculty is closely linked to the non-university research infrastructure on campus (DLR, Leibniz, Fraunhofer) via cooperation professorships and is strong both in basic research (coordinated programmes) and in application-oriented research. Together with the MAPEX Centre, the faculty plays a leading role in the interdisciplinary academic focus "Materials Sciences and their Technologies" at the University of Bremen and is involved in several graduate programmes in the field of materials sciences, space travel and logistics.

Support for founders

The University of Bremen is a founding member and thus an active part of the BRIDGE university initiative since September 2002. BRIDGE comprises initial advice on self-employment and, above all, a start-up-relevant course programme. Interested parties are offered over 20 sessions each semester to develop and/or improve their start-up skills. There are start-up competitions (Campus Ideas) and funding programmes (EXIST) for which the university lecturers in the faculty act as mentors.

Other special features

Our close co-operation with engineering research institutions located on the central campus sets us apart. In addition to the university institutes that belong directly to the department, these are also institutes run under the auspices of organisations such as Fraunhofer , Leibniz or the DLR. The connection to the departments is organisationally so anchored that the management of these institutes is often linked to the management of an area in the department ("chair"). For the students, this provides a wealth of employment and doctoral research opportunities.
