Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Balanced economics and engineering education and training, teaching of soft skills, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering branches of study, interdisciplinary professional fields, incl. seminars and case studies/project work, 9-week subject-related work placement, 4-week technical practical training, theoretical or practical thesis, professional skills, continuation course in consecutive (e.g. Industrial Engineering) and non-consecutive Master's degree programmes. Our department is part of the UN-supported initiative Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME).

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Balanced economics and engineering Education and training, fields of study in mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, interdisciplinary professional fields incl. seminar and case study/project work, theoretical or practical thesis, professional skills. We combine academic education and training with practical application relevance, e.g. by taking up current research topics in teaching. Our department is part of the UN-supported initiative Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME).

Special features regarding the international orientation

Cooperation agreements with many partner universities, including 57 in Europe via Erasmus+, and worldwide; Well over 200 exchange places (of which about 190 Erasmus+ places) for students in the department (as at Oct. 2025); Advice provided by the department’s International Office, American-African-European Summer and Winter Schools, language courses in Business English, additional modules for studying abroad integrated in the Master's degree course to facilitate crediting

Participation in the (technical) equipment of the Mechanical Engineering faculties: e.g. project house METEOR, experimental and digital factory as well as electrical and information technology: e.g. computer workstations with FEM software for the development of electromagnetic energy converters, laboratory hall including transformers, DC machines, engine test benches; Educational licences for various software tools, e.g. for material flow analyses, extensive economics databases, plus a wide range of literature available online, campus-wide WiFi, application software

Special features regarding research activities

Research into new technologies in interdisciplinary projects including in the areas of Mobility, Lightweight Materials and Energy: e.g. Smart Rail Connectivity Campus (SRCC, research campus for sustainable mobility in the Chemnitz-Erzgebirge region) and ESF junior researcher groups (including autoPre - combination of FEM and LCE methods for sustainable material selection as well as automated, AI-monitored preform production of FKV).

We have been certified by the United Nations for sustainable management education. We align teaching and practical relevance according to the principles of the “United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Management Education” (PRME). Promoting equal opportunities and complaint management. Chemnitz University of Technology (TUC) has a Centre of Equal Opportunities in Science and Research offering a wide range of services and guidance. The Department of Mechanical Engineering operates a quality-management system pursuant to DIN EN ISO 9001; this is monitored annually and recertified every 3 years.
