Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Innovative teaching-learning concept which has won many awards: 4-1 model; Each four-week lecture is followed by a project week in which students work independently in small groups on industry-related and application-based tasks in small groups;; Starter modules with special starter projects to orient students in the subject; High practical and application-related orientation, high proportion of projects, many lecturers working in the field.; Interdisciplinary cooperation between students and teaching staff in the Department of Engineering Sciences and Communication.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Project-based Master's degree course, in which two large Master's projects address a central topic, culminating in the Master's thesis. The Master's degree courses in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Sustainable Engineering are strongly linked in terms of content.

Special features regarding the international orientation

International partnerships and courses, International Office, Welcome Centre for incoming students, Study Buddy programme for international students, international guest academics, stays abroad of own staff (teacher exchange, Erasmus, DAAD, etc.), defined mobility window in the fifth Bachelor's semester, additional certificate "International Engineer", over 30 languages offered in the Language Centre, cross-cultural communication in the syllabus.

The Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg is one of the youngest state higher education institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia and has above-average modern and high-quality technical equipment in all areas which is constantly updated and expanded (new and expanded laboratories, etc.).

Other special features

The IWK department is the recipient of the university prize awarded by the German Engineering Association for "Best Machine Hall 2015" for special and innovative teaching concepts. The "StartGut" support programme is the recipient of the 2014 award for innovative early study phases (Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (Donors' Association for the Promotion of Science and Humanities in Germany)). For project-based teaching, Prof. Winzker was awarded the IEEE Education Award in 2015; IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is the largest technical professional association in the world; the prize was awarded to a German for the first time ever. The University Teaching Prize has been awarded several times to the Department of Engineering and Communication (IWK).
