Special features regarding teaching

Bachelor's and Master's courses are characterised by a very high proportion of laboratory practicals. Students can choose one of the three branches of Biochemistry, Chemistry and Technical Chemistry and also select their own specialisations through the compulsory elective modules. The final semester which is dedicated to writing the final thesis (together with a project in the same subject for the Bachelor's thesis) can be completed 100% in industry, as can the practical semester.

Special features regarding the international orientation

It is possible to complete a practical semester or the final thesis at a partner university or other higher education institution. The most intensive cooperation is with Fudan University, Shanghai (China), University of Wellington (New Zealand) and Hong Kong Baptist University (China).

Special features regarding the equipment

The faculty has laboratories with modern equipment that covers the entire scope of Chemistry (Biochemistry, Bioanalysis, Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, Physical, Macromolecular and Technical Chemistry, Water Chemistry and Process Simulation). In 2008, the department moved into a new building, the equipment is kept up-to-date by ongoing investments.

Special features regarding research and development

The faculty is actively involved in the Center for Chemistry, Material and Product Development (OHM-CMP), which arranges contracts from industry. Research and development projects with industry partners, in which students participate as part of their final thesis or as student assistants, are constantly being carried out in these laboratories. Doctorate opportunities are offered at German and international universities (e.g. at the University of Wellington, New Zealand).

Other special features

After 3 semesters, students choose one of the three branches of study in Biochemistry, Chemistry or Technical Chemistry, i.e. they can familiarise themselves with the various sub-disciplines first and then choose their specialisation. The three branches of study are also offered in the Master's degree. In addition, suitable Bachelor graduates can do an interdisciplinary master's degree at the TH Nürnberg. For the compulsory elective subjects in the Bachelor's and Master's courses, modules from other faculties can also be selected.
