Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

In addition to the "pure" degree courses, the department offers interdisciplinary degree courses. Mechanical Engineering or Process Engineering can be combined with scientific fields of study (Chemistry, Physics, Biology) or engineering fields (Economics, Computer Science, Energy Engineering). All students in Mechanical Engineering, Energy and Process Engineering, and Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering receive programming training in the first two semesters, which is optimally designed for students who have never had anything to do with programming.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

In the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Process Engineering at Rhineland-Palatinate Technical University (RPTU), students have a very wide range of options for structuring their own Master's degree course, after completing Bachelor's degree courses that are general for the most part. Everyone can choose one or more specialisations in the Master's programme. English-language Master's degree courses offer further international study opportunities after the Bachelor's degree. There are no or very few barriers to entry into the Master's degree courses.

Special features regarding the international orientation

There are exchange programmes with French and Chinese universities and the international Master's degree course Commercial Vehicle Technology and the Master's degree course Digital Process Engineering. In addition, all students have the opportunity to study abroad through the Erasmus programme. Opportunities outside Europe are also available and are strongly supported by the department.

Special features regarding the equipment

Thanks to the large number of projects with third-party funding, the department has excellent technical equipment. The laboratories are state-of-the-art. There is a new research building for production engineering with a range of new large-scale equipment financed by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Subject-specific databases are provided.

Special features regarding research activities

Research in the department is split evenly between industry-related research and basic research. Numerous research projects are conducted in cooperation with the chairs or with other departments and research institutions in Germany and abroad. Research in the department includes exciting questions about bioprocess engineering, process and energy engineering, the entire spectrum of mechanical and automotive engineering, materials science and production engineering. The department cooperates very closely with the Fraunhofer Institutes, the Leibniz Institutes and the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), all located close to campus.

Other special features

The topic of sustainability is firmly anchored in the curricula of the degree programmes. The department has had an equality plan in place for many years.
