Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The Mechanical Engineering and Production department has 100 staff members with a strong practical orientation and who teach over 1600 students at 8 institutes. In 15 laboratories, foundations with a high practical relevance are taught increasingly using digital methods. The teaching experiments are linked to the latest research and development topics. The department admits new students in every semester, it is very flexible when it comes to late start of studies or part-time degree programmes, it has a wide range of mandatory elective subjects, training as a welding specialist engineer. All classes are held on the Berliner Tor campus.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Many partnerships with European universities as part of the Erasmus programme, and very well organised partnerships with universities in the USA and Hong Kong together with the International Office of HAW Hamburg. There is a joint degree programme with a partner university in Shanghai, China. The teaching staff extensively support practicals abroad. Since 2016 at least 25 credit points in English in selected optional required modules are offered in each summer semester. A Bachelor's degree course taught in English will be introduced from the summer semester 2025.

Special features regarding the equipment

Eight institutes with 15 laboratories focusing on diverse topics: Centre for energy technology, wind farm, energy campus, laboratory for tribology and lubricants, special laboratory for screw joints, additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping plants, welding engineering training, production logistics, company simulation, process management with SAP, simulation of complex production, Heinrich Blasius Institute for Physical Technologies, surface technology, plastics technology laboratory, laboratory for mechanics and mechatronics, centre for industrial robotics, MSR laboratory, laboratory for drive technology.

Special features regarding research and development

In many cases, ongoing research projects have a high level of practical relevance. About a quarter of scientific assistants are now active in research. Increasingly, there are institutionalised collaborations with Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), e.g. a joint Collaborative Research Centre, or with non-university research institutions, e.g. in the field of aviation, additive manufacturing or mobility topics.

Other special features

The previous Bachelor's degree programmes were merged to form a single degree course. In the regular degree programme and degree programme with vocational and academic elements, there are four areas of study: Development and Design, Energy Engineering, Production Engineering and Management, and Digital Engineering and Mobility. There are 12 main areas of specialisation, such as robotics and applied AI, digital production and micro-mobility. The new degree course has been running since the summer semester 2020.
