Special features regarding teaching

Teaching is extremely important in the department. Most courses are offered by full-time lecturers. They are complemented by instructors from industry who ensure that current issues are incorporated. An important component of teaching is the laboratory exercises that are conducted in very well-equipped laboratories. All courses are evaluated by the students. The results are discussed in the committees and, if necessary, improvements identified. Some of the courses are held in industry.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Foreign-language courses for students and faculty staff; Dual-degree programmes with Finland and Mexico; Practical semester and final papers abroad; International (incoming) students in our department very often decide to prepare their thesis in Germany (direct supervision in our department); Exchange of employees and teachers; Student exchanges with Thailand

Special features regarding the equipment

The technical equipment of the faculty is reflected mainly in the laboratories. They have excellent equipment and are continually expanded and upgraded. Some of the machines available were donated to the faculty by companies. Many applications for large-scale devices have also helped to further improve the technical infrastructure. The students have access to laboratories with modern equipment that can be used in laboratory sessions and project work.

Special features regarding research and development

Many of the research projects at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences are not limited to the Mechanical Engineering department, but are interdisciplinary, e.g. carried out in cooperation with the Social Work, Health and Nursing department at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences or with the Biology department at the University of Tübingen. These projects strengthen the interdisciplinary work and encourage to take a broader view. The mechanical engineering faculty's current key research areas are Industry 4.0, the smart factory, plastics technology and resource efficiency.
