Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

We set ourselves apart by focusing on digitalisation and modern technologies. Special features include our interactive learning laboratory for digitalisation, a driving simulator, VR glasses and graphics tablets in the makerspace as well as brain-computer interfaces in the sales and purchasing lab. There are more than 20 laboratories and a maximum of 40 students per degree course each semester. Topics such as Industry 4.0, robotics, materials for sustainability, e-mobility and virtual simulations are central. Of the professors, 12 are under the age of 45 and teach in areas such as smart factories, AI and additive manufacturing.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Two of the eight Master's degree courses are taught entirely in English, one of which is a research Master's degree. Depending on the degree course, our Master's programmes comprise up to 50% elective subjects. The focus is on energy-efficient product development, resource-efficient production, data management, management and recycling. There are more than 20 laboratories and a maximum of 27 students per degree course each semester. Half of the eight programme directors are under the age of 45 and teach in areas such as sustainable materials in plastics engineering, digital transformation and Industry 4.0 as well as smart factories.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Establishment of a Bachelor's degree course in "Mechanical Engineering" taught 100% in English (hybrid courses in the first semester). Double degree options. Two Master's degree programmes taught in English with a large international component. Exchange of professors. Special courses taught in English for incoming students. A professor acts as the International Officer for students. Many partnerships with international universities for study and research abroad. New study and examination organisations (SPO) will include the option of a semester abroad with full credit recognition (without extending the duration of studies).

Special features regarding the equipment

Scanning electron & X-ray microscope. 3D CT scanner. Audi E-Tron test vehicle. Cold-chamber die-casting machine for aluminium and magnesium. 20 MAGMASOFT workstations. Large-scale 3D printer Q-BIG 3D Queen. 5-axis high-speed milling machine. Drive and whole vehicle test bench. Driving simulator E-bike test bench. Selective laser melting system. High-power ultrashort pulse, green, UV, & CO2 marking lasers. 4- to 6-axis industrial robots. Vibrating sample magnetometer. Coordinate-measuring machine. Injection moulding machine 9 specialised databases Access to research equipment as part of theses.

Special features regarding research and development

Advanced Materials and Manufacturing, the most research-intensive focus area of Aalen University (HSAA), is located at our faculty for the development of battery materials & resource-saving manufacturing technologies, such as laser material processing and lightweight construction. Nine of our professors conduct research in the Smart Materials and Intelligent Production Technologies for Energy-Efficient Products (SmartPro) cooperation network. In addition, 3D printing project using artificial moon dust with the European Space Agency (ESA), EU lighthouse project KI-Werkstatt Mittelstand (AI workshop for SMEs), project 5G++ Flexicell: 5G network to support manufacturing in SMEs.

Other special features

Humanoid robot Moritz-Maria Eisenhardt for research on human-robot interaction. Dedicated Professor of Sustainable Materials in Plastics Engineering. Millions in funding for sustainability research: "Preserve" and "RewitAI" projects. Flagship project RecycleBot (increasing the recycling rate through AI). Excellent theses on the topic of sustainability: e.g. "Flax-polyester biocomposites" or "Innovative solution for hybrid materials". 4th annual Leadership Day on the topic of "Leadership in times of AI". 1. Plastics and Lightweight Construction Forum 2024 for dialogue between research and industry.
