Special features regarding teaching

The Business Information Systems degree courses in Mannheim are provided in conjunction with the Faculty of Business Administration. The degree course offer numerous opportunities for specialisation in Data Analytics, Enterprise Information Systems, Software Engineering and Reliability of IT Systems. The Master’s in Data Science in Mannheim is focused on the topics of machine learning and big data. Courses from the Faculty of Social Sciences are integrated into the degree course. Both Master's degree courses include a large number of projects accompanying the lectures.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The Master's degree programmes in Business Informatics and Data Science can be studied entirely in English. A large proportion of students are international students; Mannheim is known as a cosmopolitan, international city; Large number of exchange programmes with internationally renowned universities. As part of the European University ENGAGE.EU, students from Mannheim can study virtually at renowned universities throughout Europe and acquire international learning skills and ECTS credits.

The technical equipment is up to date; In addition to lecture halls equipped with modern multimedia technology and campus-wide WiFi coverage, there are computer rooms and GPU servers available for big data projects. Additional computing power can be used via the BW Cluster. There is a separate computer cluster for team projects; Good student work environment, university-wide hybrid teaching, Zoom available throughout the university; Subject research courses at the university library; Access to subject-specific databases (ACM, IEEE Explore, DBLP;...)

Special features regarding research activities

Focus on mastering large and complex data sets in industry and society with a focus on data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, data integration, IT security and software development. Numerous research projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and the EU. Participation in the Mannheim Centre for Data Science and the Institute for Enterprise Systems.

Support for founders

Mentoring and coaching of spin-offs by the Department for SME Research, start-up consulting provided by the entrepreneur association Entrepreneur Rhein-Neckar eV directly at the university, large number of company contacts through the Department for Enterprise Systems (InEs); Extensive experience with EXIST start-up grants. Numerous successful business start-ups in the field of Business Information Systems (e.g. Ubivent, STOCARD, Treasury Intelligence, Synchronite, Movilitas, OPAL Analytics). ENACTUS Mannheim e.V.
