Special features regarding teaching

The FHM organises its programmes by trimesters. Thanks to the FHM competence model, the curricula are interdisciplinary, academically compact and application-oriented. Small study groups and study group supervisors allow individual support of each student. Close integration of theory and practice is achieved by practice projects integrated in the course, a close network with medium-sized companies and practical experience of the teaching staff.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Internationalisation is a key quality and development feature of the University of Applied Sciences of SMEs (FHM). The aim is to support SMEs in the internationalisation process through internationally oriented degree courses and international research projects. The Campus.International offers an extensive range of international courses for applicants from abroad. The FHM also maintains numerous partnerships in Europe and beyond through the International Office, particularly with Asian and British universities, and a German-Asian SME Institute.

Special features regarding the equipment

There are several PC clusters with the latest hardware and software available to the students, which can be used in courses and practical projects. The entire university is equipped with WiFi; The equipment in the seminar rooms is state of the art (projectors, whiteboards, etc.); The media campus with news, TV, radio and photo studios is available to all students. All students have online access to the statistics portal Statista & comprehensive software. Students from all campuses can access more than 5,000 sources in the online library.

Special features regarding research activities

The research activities of the faculty focus on the topics "Entrepreneurship", "Sustainability", "City and Country & Mobility" as well as "Digitalisation/Security". These research activities, which are strongly geared towards SMEs, are documented in various institutes and endowed professorships, such as the School of Startups & Succession, the Centre for Sustainable Governance, the Institute for SMEs and the Cyber Institute in Düren. Of particular note is the Open Innovation City project with a funding volume of €5.4 million.

Support for founders

All Bachelor’s students of the Faculty of Business must draw up a business plan and receive the "Entrepreneurship Label" of the FHM upon passing the corresponding module. With this programme, the FHM aims to reflect the importance of the topic of business start-ups. Furthermore, the FHM maintains close contacts with the Founders Foundation, which is a non-profit organisation that has set itself the goal of educating business founders in a sustainable way. In addition, the FHM offers the "School of Startups & Succession" and regularly hosts the "Starters Summit", a start-up competition.

Other special features

In its study "Model in Diversity 2022", the Institute of Management and Economic Research (IMWF) certified the outstanding commitment of the University of Applied Sciences of SMEs (FHM), thus underlining the relevance of diversity for the university. Sustainability is one of the main pillars of FHM. It is one of the three guiding themes in degree course development. This is expressed in particular by the new MA Sustainability & Climate Management and the “Sustainability Manager” continuing education course. FHM maintains a Centre of Sustainable Governance for extensive sustainability research.
