Special features regarding teaching

Courses in cooperation with Leibniz Institute for Economic Research Halle (IWH). IWH staff are incorporated into courses; work placements and jobs for student assistants at the IWH. A variety of inter-disciplinary specialisation options, which incorporate the latest research trends in the teaching. Teaching of interface skills for communicating knowledge of Empirical Economics with a high degree of political relevance under the conditions of a pluralistic democracy; modern didactic concept with interactive lectures, lectures in English.

Special features regarding the international orientation

In the Bachelor's programme, there are two English-language degree courses - "Business Economics" and "Engineering and Management" - which are geared specifically towards international students. There are also two international degree courses in the Master's programme: the English-language MSc Economics and a trilingual double degree course in cooperation with the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Milan.

The Economics area has four generously equipped PC clusters and is a leader in multimedia teaching thanks to its link to the Teaching and Learning Centre at the University. The campus used by the Economics faculty boasts comprehensive (and naturally free) WiFi access for all University members. Access to detailed databases via the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research Halle (IWH).

Special features regarding research activities

"Empirical Economics and Political Consulting" centre of competence. Empirical Economics analyses economic contexts on an empirical basis, develops quantitative models and uses them for prognoses and the guidance of politics based on the effects of economic policy measures. The key area is characterised by the cooperation with the Institute of Economic Research in Halle (IWH), which is one of the major German economic research institutes.

At the Martin Luther University's Department of Economics, it is not so much the Economics chairs that contribute to business start-ups.

Other special features

The whole subject of Economics is offered. In addition, many areas of special public interest that go beyond the classic Economics areas are covered, in particular Economic History, Health and Behavioural Economics, Business Ethics, Financial Markets and Financial Market Regulation, as well as Environmental Economics. The department's teaching programme emphasizes application-related work with economic data across all content-related topics and thus enables skills acquisition in applied econometrics and statistics.
