Area of study

Latin (Teaching Degree)

Target group

Latin Philology deals with the Latin literature of Antiquity, the Middle Ages and modern times as well as their history of impact on the cultures of Europe. The Latin degree course covers a broad spectrum of topics and genres: In addition to epic, lyrical, elegiac and dramatic poetry, there are specialist texts from philosophy, historiography, rhetoric, state affairs, law and natural sciences. The main emphasis in teaching lies with the central authors of ancient Latin literature from Plautus to Augustinus. Research focuses on the literature of the time of Cicero and the Augustan epoch, the history of ancient rhetoric, investigations of ancient texts with the help of modern literary and cultural theories (especially narrative theory, narratology), the scientific and technical historical texts of the ancient world as well as Neo-Latin literature (that is, Latin literature since the Renaissance). The subject is closely related to the other disciplines of ancient science (e.g. ancient history and classical archaeology), to the humanities that had a central reference point in antiquity (e.g. philosophy, theology, rhetoric) and to modern literary studies.
