Target group

Latin Philology is concerned with the Latin literature of Antiquity, the Middle Ages and Modern Age as well as its history of impact in the cultures of Europe. The main focus of the MA course is on Latin literature including its central authors and texts. The compulsory elective modules provide insights into related disciplines (philologies, ancient studies, humanities) and are thus particularly suited to an individual consolidation of knowledge already acquired. In this way, you can customise around a third of the curriculum to reflect your interests. The seminar offers regular excursions to explore the cultural area of Greek-Roman antiquity and to gain insight into the methodology and functioning of related disciplines in ancient studies. Participation in discussion groups and conferences allows for first steps in the world of research and prepares for independent academic work. The study of the Latin language and culture has a long tradition in Tübingen. The first professorship in Latin studies, strictly speaking, was already established in 1496. Today’s Philological Seminar was founded in 1838, making it the oldest seminar at the university. It comprises three chairs, two of which are in Latin studies. Through its wide range of courses, high research intensity, international networking and well-equipped library, it offers an attractive place for study and teaching.
