Special features regarding research activities

In terms of research, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (WW) consistently works on both basic principles and market and technology-related issues. The close links to industry help to drive this work forward. This is also reflected by the current funding ranking from the German Research Foundation (DFG). When it comes to research funding, the materials scientists at the FAU are leaders in Germany: A comparison of the individual disciplines shows a top position in Germany with 25.9 million euros.

Other special features

The materials sciences at FAU ranked in the top 100 of the QS World University Ranking in 2021. Materials science occupies 6th place in the national ranking. In teaching and research, all material classes are represented by a dedicated professorial Chair. With 9 professorial Chairs, it is the largest Materials Science department in Europe.
