Special features regarding teaching

The teaching has a strong research focus due to the active involvement of students in many research projects and has been assessed as above average by the students. Due to the manageable size of the department, close contact between students and lecturers is ensured. As part of the mentoring programme, each student is supported in the content specialisation of the course by a professor. Tutors help the effective learning in small tutorial groups. Modules in other fields enable students to broaden their horizons.

Special features regarding the equipment

With the "Powerwall", the faculty has one of the most modern large-scale projection systems in Europe. This opens up entirely new perspectives in the field of visual data exploration. The "Media Room" offers a research environment for the design, development and evaluation of new interaction technologies, input devices and the simulation of future working environments. "e-David", a painting industrial robot for creativity research, there is also a "Virtual Reality Lab" and the "Computer Vision Lab". In the "Centre for Visual Computing of Collectives" further special laboratories are being built.

Special features regarding research activities

In the long-term, the faculty has been pursuing the joint research perspective "Explorative analysis and visualisation of large data spaces" as the joint research profile of all work groups, with different application fields such as Big Data, Cyber-Physical Systems, Health, Network Analysis and Software Certification. The faculty is involved in many inter-disciplinary projects, e.g. with the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Political Science and Public Administration, Economics, Linguistics, Psychology, Sociology, Sports Science, Literature/Art/Media and History.

Support for founders

At the University of Konstanz, there is a start-up advisory service that supports students and scientists with spin-offs. The University of Konstanz can also offer financial support in the form of transfer platforms. Furthermore, there are contact networks such as "Campus Startup Konstanz" or cyberLAGO, which offer events and exchange opportunities on the topic of start-ups, to support founders. KNIME GmbH, Vidatics GmbH and BaseX GmbH are examples of successful spin-offs from the Department of Computer and Information Science.

Other special features

As part of the Excellence Strategy, the department is involved in the Cluster of Excellence "Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour", which is dedicated to data-based research into collective behaviour, from the swarm intelligence of animal groups to human decision-making behaviour and economic networks. In addition, the Advanced Data and Information Literacy Track (ADILT), an interdisciplinary, undergraduate data and information literacy programme for students in all disciplines, was developed from within the department.
