Special features regarding teaching

The Institute of Pharmacy at Freie Universität Berlin is the only university in Berlin and Brandenburg that offers the degree course in Pharmacy. Research and teaching are closely linked to the Berlin research landscape, in particular to the Charité. The curriculum includes a wide range of practical courses, which take place in laboratories with modern equipment. This gives students the opportunity to gain practical experience in all areas of pharmaceutical work.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Our institute is a frequent host for students within the framework of the Erasmus programme, whereby the inclusion of foreign students in all theoretical and practical courses is possible by arrangement. A proportion of between 5 and 10% of our students take the opportunity to spend a semester abroad during their studies or after the 2nd stage of the pharmaceutical examination. Particularly intensive contacts exist with the University of Gainesville/Florida.

Special features regarding the equipment

All course rooms are equipped with modern communication and presentation technology. The practicals and research labs are in line with international standards, the technical equipment for laboratory practicals is continuously updated and adapted to the factors of modern education. We attach great importance to comprehensive occupational and health protection – all labs have been modernised in this regard.

Special features regarding research activities

The research at the Institute relates both to drugs and patients. Due to its close networking, the institute has two graduate programs (PharMetriX and BB3R) and conducts collaborative research projects funded by the DFG, the EU and the Excellence Initiative. The research spectrum comprises the Isolation and Characterisation of Biogenic Agents, Analysis of Biomarkers and Drugs, Modelling, Synthesis and Testing of Active Substances, studies on the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of active agents used clinically as well as the pharmaceutical-technological aspects of drug targeting.

Other special features

The Institute of Pharmacy has a high proportion of foreign students, who contribute to the joint success of their studies on the basis of tolerance and mutual support. This is supported by the international doctoral students who are assigned to supervise the students and serve as contact persons in case of problems for students with the same mother tongue.
